Maybe I am more like a Western parent. My girls have playdates and sleepovers. Not so often because Asian parents rarely invite them but I arrange sometimes and if my girls are invited, I wouldn’t say ‘no’. I love my girls go to sleepovers. Why not?? My girls are happy and I don’t need to take care of them. I can have some freedom on that night! Go and have fun!
However my girls don’t have computer games. They don’t have time to watch TV especially week days. My daughter practiced the violin almost 2 hours after she was done with her homework yesterday. How could she have time to watch TV? One of my friend said, ‘I’ve never seen a child takes three lessons per week’. My girl takes two private lessons and one ensenmble lesson per week. My friend is a westerner. I definitely say some of Western kids have three lessons per week. This is the severe music world. Practice, practice and practice.
I can say time management for my girls is very hard. But I don’t agree no playdates and sleepovers. Do you know Itzhak Perlman, a famous violinist? His teacher Dorothy Delay said to him, ‘make friends’. Music is relationship. In the chamber orchestra, with piano accompanists and solo with the orchestra… everything is relationship. Of course I allow my girls go to sleepovers because of not only for their music success but here is a stage Mom knows future musicians need good relationship with their friends.
What do you think about it?
